Destination Imagination 2014/15
Here is a program recommended to us by one of the science teachers at BLMS. Please email Yvette Artman at firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested in running this program. We currently do not have anything like it at Challenger and would only pursue it if there is a parent or teacher interested in running it.
The Destination Imagination program encourages teams of learners to have fun, take risks, focus and frame challenges while incorporating STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), the arts and service learning. Our participants learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the collaborative problem solving process. Teams may showcase their solutions at a tournament."
Teams of up to 7 work from September to February on challenge materials. This includes practicing Instant Challenges, discussing strategies, and building teamwork skills. Most teams start at one 1-hour meeting per week and increase days and times as the competition (in Feb./Mar.) approaches.
Teams are coached by any willing adult. It can be a parent, teacher or college student looking for volunteer hours. A teacher advisor is NOT required.
The DI website is a wealth of resources- http://www.destinationimagination.org/ but one really great video is on the video page- http://www.destinationimagination.org/ditv and is called "What is Destination Imagination?"
